The Great Outdoors Month - A presidential proclamation- "During Great outdoors month, we celebrate our nation's natural heritage, reaffirming our commitment to conserve our environment, and recognize the many volunteers who help maintain out natural spaces."

June 1st - Tennessee and Kentucky Become States - On June 1 both Tennessee and Kentucky were admitted into the union. Tennessee became the 16th state on June 1, 1796. Kentucky became the 15th state on June 1, 1792.

June 1st - International Children's Day - A day when all children across the globe are celebrated. This day dates back to 1925. The world conference for the well being of children in Geneva, Switzerland is where it all started.

June 2nd - The U.S. Civil War Ends - The last standing confederate general, Edmund K. Smith, surrendered on June 2, 1865, ending the Civil War.

June 2nd - The American Indians are Given U.S. Citizenship - The Synder Act gave the Native Americans U.S. citizenship on June 2, 1924.

June 4th - The Battle of Midway, World War Two - The battle known as the "Midway" started on June 4, 1942 between the United States and Japan. It was on of the most important battles fought during World War Two.

June 5th - World Environment Day - Each year a new theme is used to raise awareness about the environment.

June 6th - D-Day, World War II - Codename "Operation Overload" on June 6, 1944 a group of allies invaded Western Europe.

June 7th - Philadelphia Banned the Import of Slaves - On June 7, 1712 Philadelphia ban the importing of slaves. Philadelphia was a major city that was used to transport slaves at the time.

June 9th - The Battle of Brandy Station - On June 9, 1863 the battle of Brandy station took place. This battle is known as the beginning of the end of the war.

June 10th - The First Person was Hung During the Salem Witch Trials - On June 10, 1692 the first woman (and person) was hung her name was Bridget Bishop she was hung in Gallows Hill.

June 11th - The Great Barrier Reef Discovered - On June 11, 1770, the Great Barrier Reef was discovered off the coast of Australia by Captain James Cook. To learn more about the discovery of the reef and the types of animals that live on or near it, be sure to visit this website.

June 12th - Anne Frank's Birthday - Anne Frank was a German girl who was forced into hiding with her entire family during World War Two. While she was in hiding, she kept a journal, which was later published as a book. Anne was born on June 12, 1929.

June 13th - Thurgood Marshal - Thurgood Marshal was the first African-American man to be nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court on June 13, 1967. To find out more about Thurgood Marshal and if he won a seat.

June 14th - The U.S. Army Founded - On June 14, 1774 the United States Army was founded.

June 14th - Stars and Stripes - On June 14, 1772 America officials had a flag. The Continental Congress decided to make the stars and stripes the American flag. Now called Flag Day.

June 15th - Arkansas Becomes a State - On June 15, 1836 Arkansas became the 25th state when they joined the union.

June 17th - The Battle of Bunker Hill - The Battle of Bunker Hill occurring during the American Revolution. The battle took place on June 17,1775. It happened during the siege of Boston.

June 18th - The First Trans-Atlantic Flight by a Woman - On June 18, 1928 Amelia Earhart made the first complete Trans-Atlantic flight. She was the first woman to accomplish this.

June 18th - The War of 1812 - On June 18, 1812 a war that would turn out to be a stalemate was started between the United States and the British Empire. A treaty called the "Treaty of Ghent" ended the war in 1815.

June 20th - World Refugee Day - On June 20, 2000 World Refugee Day was declared. It is for "recognizing and celebrating the contributions of refugees throughout the world."

June 21st - Guam Becomes A U.S. Territory - On June 21, 1898 Guam became a U.S. Territory.

June 23rd - William Penn Signs a Treaty with the Lenni Lenape Indians - On June 23, 1683 William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania signed a treaty with the Lenni Lenape Indians the treat was of a "friendship" in nature that resolved a lot of the issues going on between the Indians and colony at the time.

June 25th - The Korean War Started - What was actually called a "conflict" between South Korea and North Korea started on June 25, 1950. The war ended just over three years later on July 27, 1953 in a cease fire.

June 25th - Virginia Becomes a State - On June 25, 1788 Virginia was admitted to the union as the 10th state.

June 27th - Helen Keller's Birthday - Helen was born a healthy baby on June 27, 1880. When she was 19 months old, Helen became sick with an unknown disease that left her both blind and deaf. A woman named Anne Sullivan worked as Helen's teacher and taught her to communicate. Helen Keller later went on to become an activist and an author.

June 28th - The Treaty of Versailles - On June 28, 1919 the German Prime Minister, Hermann Muller, signed the Treaty of Versailles and ended World War One.

June 30th - The Ratification of the 26th Amendment - On June 30, 1971 the 26th Amendment was ratified. It lowered the voting age to 18.
