What Is the Deal With Weather?
What is a rainy day? What do people mean when they say it’s humid? Why is a windy day better than a hot sunny day? If you’ve ever found yourself asking these questions, you’re in the right place. These are all describing the weather! It plays a big part in our lives. If we didn’t dress warmly for winter, we would probably freeze. Learning about the weather for kids is important so they know why the weather forecast exists.
What Is It?
We use this word to describe how the sky and clouds are on a specific day. Weather and climate are two different terms. Climate is a word used to describe the average weather of an area over an extended duration of time. For example, the climate of Antarctica is chilly because it’s almost always cold there. Everyone's life is affected by the weather. That's why learning about weather and how it works is important.
Clouds
Rainy clouds look dark and grey but did you know that clouds are made of gas? When warm air from the sea evaporates, it cools off and becomes a cloud. Clouds look different depending on how much water is inside them.
Snow
The water inside the clouds freezes when the air is cold. These are snowflakes and they drop in the form of powder. Snow can be light but it can also be heavy in colder weather conditions.
Rain
Most people like rain but did you know that rain also comes from the water droplets inside clouds? When these join together and become too heavy, they fall like rain drops.
What Determines Weather Conditions?
These are the factors that determine what kind of weather there will be on a particular day.
Wind
The wind is moving air and it can help cool us down if we’re sweaty. There are different types of winds. The breezy type is safe, however powerful winds can cause significant damage like slamming windows and toppling over trees.
Atmospheric Pressure
Many storms or hurricanes happen due to a change in atmospheric pressure. This is essentially the weight of the air in a specific place. Scientists often look at atmospheric pressure to predict hurricanes.
Precipitation
Rain is a type of precipitation; so are snow and sleet. This is when water in any state of matter drops to the ground.
Humidity
This is used to describe how much moisture there is in the air. Hot air usually has more moisture.
Temperature
Have you ever felt hot on a particular day? That’s called temperature! Which describes how hot or cold it is.
How do Scientists Study Climate?
Scientists need to study the weather and climate if they want to predict what kind of weather we’ll experience tomorrow. People who study weather are called meteorologists.
Weather Forecasting
Meteorologists have to constantly keep a check on the weather, but they can’t do this on their own. That's why they use special scientific instruments that tell them what kind of weather is coming. The thermometer and the barometer are two instruments that were invented a really long time ago to help us predict the weather.
Barometer
This instrument is used to measure atmospheric pressure.
Wind Vane
This lets scientists know which direction the wind is blowing in.
Thermometer
Just like a thermometer is used to check your body temperature, there’s also one used to check the temperature of the atmosphere.
Satellites
These are much faster ways of tracking weather. They scan the earth’s atmosphere for any weather changes from space! Scientists need efficient systems like these to keep them updated on the weather so that they can share weather conditions with other people.
What is Extreme Weather?
This is the kind of weather that causes a lot of damage. It can destroy homes and cause a lot of deaths. Weather forecasts usually try to predict this type of weather in advance so people can evacuate in time or prepare to stay home. It isn’t safe to go out in extreme weather conditions.
Thunder Storms
This is a common type of extreme weather condition when there’s thunder and lightning in the sky along with heavy rainfall. Lightning is caused by the water droplets in the clouds turning into ice and then clashing against each other, which makes electricity. Lightning is extremely hot and can easily fry whatever person or object it strikes. Did you know that it’s hotter than the sun? Thunder is the sound that we hear during this type of storm, which is the sound of clouds crashing into each other.
Hurricanes
This is a slightly less common weather condition but it causes severe damage when it comes. Many countries have hurricane warning systems in place so that they can evacuate in time. A hurricane brings strong winds moving in a circular path. It can destroy everything in its path. Hurricanes spread far and wide so they don’t just affect the area where they start from but also nearby areas. They can also cause floods because of the strong wind disturbing water bodies.
Damage Caused By Extreme Weather
It takes a lot of time, money and medical supplies to recover from the damage caused by extreme weather conditions. That’s why learning about weather and being prepared for it in advance is important. If we didn’t have meteorologists, we’d never know when the next thunderstorm is going to come. Hurricanes have destroyed entire cities in the past as well.
Hopefully you now better understand the importance of learning about weather. If scientists couldn’t predict extreme weather conditions, we wouldn’t be able to prepare for them in advance. Extreme weather causes a lot of damage to property and even takes lives. Besides, it always helps to have an umbrella at hand if it’s going to rain. That way you can protect your clothes and belongings once it starts to pour.
