Classroom Activities for the Winter Season
Winter is the favorite time of the year for most kids, and it is the perfect opportunity for you to incorporate some winter activities into your lesson plan. Although the weather outside tends to be frightening, the learning never stops.
If you are a teacher looking for some creative and exciting ways to keep your students busy, you have come to the right place.
We have some ideas to help you celebrate winter with hands-on learning activities. These activities will help your students stay engaged in the classroom, especially when they can't go out for recess because of the snow! Read on to find out!
Here are some fun and exciting classroom activities for the winter season that you and your students will love! Have fun exploring them with your class to have the perfect winter!
1. Make a Cotton Ball Snowman
If the weather doesn't allow you to go outside, you can make snowmen in the classroom with your students. You will need the following supplies to set up this fun activity:
Supplies Required:
- Cotton balls
- Glue
- Googly eyes
- Craft paper
- Snowman decorations and winter stickers
Directions:
1. Start by printing a snowman template or have the students outline without a template. They will be able to do so easily. You can draw one on the chalkboard and have them follow the directions.
2. Next, distribute containers with glue and ask the students to dip the cotton balls in the glue and paste them into the outline they have drawn.
3. It is not time to make the hat. –take colored craft paper and draw an outline of the snowman's hat. Cut and paste the hat using glue. Do the same for the snowman's scarf and nose.
4. Paste the googly eyes using craft glue and have the students decorate the background using stickers. You can also make snow by pasting mini cotton balls in the background.
2. Build a Giant Igloo
Another fun activity with children is building a giant igloo inside the classroom using milk jugs. You will need 155 milk jugs to set up this activity. It may be difficult to collect them on your own, so you can ask all your students to bring some empty milk jugs from their homes.
You don't have to complete the whole exercise in one day –you can set aside some time for this activity every day.
To start, you will need 23 milk jugs for the igloo base. Glue the jugs together, making the letter 'C.' The space left will be the entrance.
Once the base is in place, start pasting new rows following the same pattern.
When you have four rows in total, begin forming the igloo dome. To form the dome, paste milk jugs together, forming a circle in row 5. Now you will see the door on the igloo. Make the rows smaller as you paste more rows.
You can ask your students to decorate the igloo using stickers and paint. It makes for a perfectly cozy reading corner or play area.
3. Snowflakes with Salt Painting
Salt painting is a fun activity to engage the students during winter. It is easy to set up, and the results are magical. Your class will love seeing the watercolors run along with the salt and they paint.
Here is a list of supplies you will need:
Supplies Required:
- Paint brushes
- Salt
- Watercolors
- White glue
- Printable snowflake templates
Directions:
1. Start by printing the snowflake template and tracing it on paper. You can skip this step and draw the image with your free hand.
2. Trace the snowflake with glue – we recommend using glue with a smaller nozzle as it is easier to work with, especially for kids. The larger bottles let out more glue than is required.
3. Once you have traced the snowflake with glue, it is time to sprinkle the salt. Pour a lot of salt on the page to ensure the glue is completely coated.
4. Shake off the excess salt from the page –use a box to do this to avoid making a mess and let it
5. Now you can begin painting on the dried salt. We recommend using liquid watercolors for this step as they are easy to use and more vibrant. Keep painting until you have covered the entire outline. Allow the paint to try and avoid touching the salt as it may come off. The final result is magical.
4. Reading Books about Winter
Another way to engage students in reading and improve their reading skills is to read books about winter. Here are some of our top picks that your students will love.
- The Mitten by Jan Brett
- Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester
- Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright
- Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner
- Penguins by Anne Schreiber
5. Making Winter-Themed Picture Frames
Another fun activity for winter is making picture frames. Here is a list of supplies you will need for this activity:
Supplies Required:
- Pictures
- Glue
- Stickers
- Glitter
- Scissors
- Popsicle stickers
- Paint
- Cotton balls
Directions:
1. Glue the Popsicle sticks together in a frame's shape to make the picture frames.
2. Use acrylic paints to paint the frames in different colors. To decorate the frame, add stickers, buttons, and silver glitter.
3. Cut the picture in the exact size of the frame and paste it at the back using glue.
6. Learn About Winter Animals
Winter is the perfect time to teach the kids about winter animals. Use pictures, posters, flashcards, and slideshows for this activity. Some of the winter animals you can share with your students include arctic fox, chipmunk, groundhog, etc.
7. Creating a Winter Classroom Theme with Your Students
A Winter classroom theme is fun to create and will give you and your students a chance to work on decorating the classroom together. You can add winter artwork, hang snowflakes, add winter posters and decorate windows to make the perfect winter classroom theme.
Wrapping Up
We hope this idea will help you have a great time with your students in the classroom and keep them engaged when the weather is too harsh for outdoor activities.
