Classroom Activities for Valentine's Day

Holidays are undoubtedly the most exciting time in the classroom, and Valentine's Day is no exception. It is natural for your students to focus on heart-shaped cards and candies on Valentine's Day, and you might find it challenging to keep them focused. However, you need not worry, as we have put together some fun Valentine's Day activities that are easy to set up and incorporate into your lesson plan.

Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity for you to teach your students about the importance of kindness and love. Try out these activities with your students to spread the love.

Here are some fun and engaging classroom activities for Valentine's Day:

1. Make a Wall of Kindness

A fun way to teach students about kindness is to have them write notes of kindness on paper shaped like a heart. This activity will also be a great writing exercise and help the students spread love and kindness. Emphasize the importance of being kind and generous.

This activity is easy to set up; all you require is a couple of pink sheets on which you can trace and cut out hearts for the students to write.

Once the students are done writing their notes, have each read their letters aloud. This activity will also improve their confidence to express their ideas and feelings before an audience.

Lastly, pin all the notes on the bulletin board and label it as the 'Wall of Kindness.' You can also paste a giant-sized heart cut out from cardboard and paste all the notes on it.

2. Poetry

Valentine's Day seems incomplete without some fun poems -it is the perfect time to teach and encourage the students to write poetry. You can explore many different styles of poetry. You can even hold a poetry contest, setting a special prize for the student with the best poem.

You can also hand out some printable Valentine's Day poems to the students and discuss them with the class.

Here is an example of a cute poem for kids:

Love Is Like Cabbage.
My love is like cabbage.
Divided into two
The leaves I give to others
The heart I give to you.

3. Valentine's Day Cards for Parents

There is no better occasion than Valentine's Day to design the perfect card for your loved ones. So, get busy and make some Valentine's Day cards with your students to give to their parents. This arts n crafts activity is really easy to set up. Here is a list of supplies you will need:

- Color pencils and markers
- Glue
- Pink craft paper
- Stickers
- Glitter

Encourage students to craft their own Valentine's Day cards. You can even print some Valentine's Day card templates and let the students choose one they would like to work on.

Set up four or five stations in the classroom and distribute the supplies to your students and allow them to be creative. You can also give them options for text to write on the cards. This activity also makes for a great writing exercise.

4. Decorating the Classroom Door

Nothing like a healthy Valentine's Day completion to get the student's creative juices flowing. Kids love the opportunity to express their ideas and be creative.

Have a classroom door decorating contest with other classes. Invite other teachers and students to join in, select a few teachers to be the judges, and choose the winner for the door-decorating contest based on aesthetics and creativity.

A great way to decorate the classroom door is to paste paper hearts on the door and write about what they love about school, teachers, and classmates.

5. Reading Activity

A reading activity on Valentine's Day may seem like a simple idea, but it is the perfect holiday to teach students the importance of reading and build their interest.

Here are some of our top Valentine's Day books to read in the classroom:

- We Go Together!: A Curious Selection of Affectionate Verse by Calef Brown
- The Valentine Bears by Eve Bunting and Jan Brett
- Mouse and Mole: Secret Valentine by Wong Herbert Yee
- Happy Valentine's Day, Curious George! by N. Di Angelo

6. Making a Collage of Hearts With Pictures

Make a collage of hearts with your students using pieces of crepe paper in pink and red colors. Stick all the hearts together to create the perfect piece of art to display on the classroom wall.

You can divide students into groups and have them cut out and paste hearts in various sizes and colors. This activity can effectively allow the student to be creative in collaboration with their classmates or friends.

Once the collage is complete, you can paste pictures on all your students in each of the hearts to make the perfect collage of pictures. These could be school pictures from field trips and other memorable events the students have spent in school.

7. Create a Heart Tree

Make a Valentine's Day tree with your students to decorate the classroom wall. Trace and cut out the tree trunk and bare branches of a tree using brown chart paper. You can pin it on the bulletin board or paste it on a wall.

Next, distribute heat cutouts of pink and red construction paper and have your students decorate the hearts however they please using glitter, stickers, and colored markers.

Ask them to write notes and messages or make drawings on the hearts to reflect their interest or favorite things. Each student will have to see the tree's beauty in their unique way.

Lastly, paste all the hearts on the braches to complete the Valentine's Day tree. Your students will love it; they'll feel like they contributed to making something beautiful.
