Why We Should Give Teachers More Planning Time Every Day

We all know that teachers are some of the busiest people around. They are constantly being pulled in different directions and are expected to be experts in everything. However, one area where they often don't get enough support is lesson planning. While it's true that teachers are given planning time within the school day, it's often not enough. Here are some reasons we should give teachers more prep time every day.

Why Do Teachers Need More Prep Time?

Planning involves more than just the objectives of the day's lesson. It includes: which activity would fulfill which objective, instructions for the activity, how will the class start and end, what homework will be assigned, etc. Therefore, planning affects the quality of education provided in a classroom. Here's the importance of planning time for teachers.

For Engaging and Effective Lesson Plans

Teachers need more time to plan to ensure that their lessons are engaging and effective. Often, teachers are given very little time to plan between classes, leading to rushed and less than stellar lesson plans.

For Target-Based Teaching

More planning time would also allow teachers to individualize instruction for their students better. With more time, teachers could find new and innovative ways to teach material that targets each student's unique needs, which is often difficult to do when short on prep time.

For Well-Managed Classrooms

Planning time within the school day is often not enough. Teachers are given just a few minutes to plan between classes in many cases. This short period can make it challenging to prepare for each class properly and lead to disruptions in instruction. Ideally, teachers would have at least an hour of planning time every day. In this hour, they would review lesson plans, create new materials, and assess student progress.

For Positively-Led Classrooms

Most teachers spend their days in the classroom teaching students. However, they also need to spend time planning and preparing their lessons. Unfortunately, they often don't have enough time to do this properly. The lack of time can lead to ineffective lessons and stressed-out teachers. Giving teachers more planning time would allow them to create better lesson plans and be less stressed. More time for planning would ultimately benefit both teachers and students.

For Well-Instructed Teaching

Giving teachers more planning time every day would allow them to meet the needs of their students better. Teachers often have to juggle many different tasks throughout the day, and having more time to plan would give them a chance to focus on their students' individual needs. Additionally, it would allow them to collaborate with other teachers more effectively and develop new ideas for instruction.

For Student-Centered Learning

Due to less planning time, teachers have to lead a teacher-centered classroom where most of the time is filled with teacher talk. If given proper prep time, teachers can come up with activities and ideas where students can have more active class participation. Such planning requires quite a lot of time.

Conclusion

Planning is a crucial part of teaching as it sets the tone of the classroom, leads the day with activities, and ultimately determines the success of the class. Therefore, teachers need more prep time. More prep time ensures the best performance of both the teachers and the students.
