Lesson Plan Title : Plural Madness
Age Range: Grade 9 through Grade 12 (High School Level)
Overview and Purpose : The following lesson will present a challenge to students in a fun atmosphere. Students compete to see who can make it "around the world" by correctly identifying singular and plural forms of spelling words!
Objective: The student will be able to spell and use the singular and plural forms of difficult words such as phenomena and criteria.
Resources:
Computer access for each student
Words written in their singular and plural forms on index cards
Activities:
Have students research a list of words to find the plural forms. Have them write the word and explain when each form would be used.
Review the words by playing "Around the World". Have two students stand next to each other. Show them a card. The first one to correctly tell you whether it is the singular or plural form gets to remain standing. The other student sits down and another student stands up. When a student is out, they sit in the seat of the student who stands up. The winner continues moving around the room, standing next to each new competitor, as the game continues. The game is over, when one student makes it around the room and back to his seat.
Closure:
You can increase the difficulty by saying a word and having the students' state whether it is singular or plural. The first student to answer then has to spell the word correctly. If they make a mistake, the other student remains standing and the student who spelled the word incorrectly sits down.
