Lesson Plan Title : Which Meaning?
Age Range: Grade 6 through Grade 8 (Middle School Level)
Overview and Purpose : Oh, those horrible homophones! Sometimes it is a struggle for students to write the correct spelling for these words. This lesson can help students identify homophones more easily.
Objective: The student will be able to
*draw pictures representing the different meanings of homophones.
*match the pictures to the correct words.
Resources:
Paper
Crayons/colored pencils/markers
Index cards with the homophones written on each one
Activities:
Use a pre-determined list of homophones (or brainstorm one with your students) and have them draw pictures representing the different meanings of the words. Have them draw one picture on each half or quarter of a piece of paper (the picture should be big enough to be seen by everyone if it is held up in the front of the class.)
Tape the pictures face down on the chalkboard and the words face up. Divide the class into two teams. Have them take turns trying to match the pictures and the words. Each correct match scores their team a point.
Closure:
Extend the lesson by having students use each set of homophone in a sentence. Have another student check the sentences and mark any they think are wrong. Have both students work together to determine if the words are used correctly. If they are not, have the students re-write the sentence or create a new one.
