Lesson Plan Title : Debate: Which is Better - A Book or a Movie?

Age Range: Grade 6 through Grade 8 (Middle School Level)

Overview and Purpose : The "Great Debate": Movies vs. Books� They both have their pros and cons, but which one is better? Students will enjoy having the opportunity to weigh in with their opinions.

Objective: The student will be able to debate whether a story is better told as a book or a movie.

Story that is both a book and a movie

Activities:

This is an activity for when you read a book that has been made into a movie. Have students watch the movie after you have completed your study of the book. Compare the book and the story and list as many differences as the students can find. (This can be done either individually or as a class.)

Have the students write a persuasive piece about why they think either the book or the movie is better.

Closure:

Before they watch the movie, you could have the students draw a picture of how they picture the character of their choice, from the description in the book. Then compare that with the character chosen to play that particular part in the movie.
