Lesson Plan Title : Understanding Idioms

Age Range: Grade 3 through Grade 5 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : This lesson will have students "chomping at the bit" to learn more about idioms!

Objective: The student will be able to

*illustrate the literal meaning of an idiom.

*explain the figurative meaning of an idiom.

Resources:

Blank paper

Markers/crayons/colored pencils

Chart paper

Activities:

Explain to your students what an idiom is and talk about some of the more common ones (break a leg, raining cats and dogs, and being up the creek without a paddle). Talk about what the phrases mean both figuratively and literally.

Pass out paper to the students and have them choose an idiom to illustrate. Have them draw the literal meaning and then write the figurative one across the bottom. Have the students cover up the meaning and show their pictures to the class. Have them try to guess what idiom the picture represents. Display the pictures around the room.

Closure:

Homework for this lesson can be to have students create a new and unique idiom. Have them write a short paragraph explaining the literal and figurative meanings and when someone would use it.
