Lesson Plan Title : Who's My Match?
Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)
Overview and Purpose : This lesson will have students thinking about the versatility of vowels by recognizing and acknowledging the long and short sounds they make.
Objective: The student will be able to match the long and short vowel sounds with the correct letter.
Resources:
2 sets of cards - one set of pictures of objects that have a short vowel sound and one set of pictures of objects that have a long vowel sound (more than one picture for each sound may be needed, depending upon how many students you have).
Activities:
Lay one card face down on each student's desk. Explain to the students that when you say 'go', they should pick up their card and make the vowel sound that matches the picture. They then have to find the student who has a picture that has the same vowel even if it makes a different sound. (A student who has a picture of a man would find the person who has a picture of a cake.)
Closure:
The above sets of cards could also be used to play a game of "concentration". As students find their matches, have them say the vowel that the matches have in common. Students can continue the lesson by making their own pair of cards for homework. After you check the cards for accuracy, the students can play the game two more times using the cards they made.
