Lesson Plan Title : The Yell of the Silent 'E'
Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)
Overview and Purpose : Oh, that timid, yet supportive, silent letter 'e' Students will get a better picture of the role that silent 'e' plays, when they put themselves in its shoes.
Objective: The student will be able to read words ending in 'e'.
Resources:
Letter cards
Activities:
Explain to your students that an 'e' at the end of a word changes the first vowel's sound. It does this by silently sneaking up to the word and yelling the vowel's name so that we hear him instead of the vowel who is trying to say it's sound. Since he is so busy yelling the vowels name, the 'e' cannot say his own name, so his sound is silent. Show them some examples. Change your voice to a yell when you sound out the long vowel sound (c - A - k - e).
Ask for volunteers to come to the front and sound out some words. Give each student a card that has one letter of the word on it. Have each student sound out their letter, but have the person holding the 'e' card shout the other vowel's name when it's that vowels turn to say its sound. Do this a few times with different words until everyone who wants to has a turn.
Closure:
This lesson can get loud and might work best outside. A follow up writing prompt might be to have students imagine how the vowel feels every time it tries to speak. Does it like the silent 'e'?
