Lesson Plan Title : Scavenger Hunt
Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)
Overview and Purpose : Listening for phonic sounds and recognizing which letters make them is important for developing students' language and literary skills. This lesson encourages students to think about how phonics is used in their environment.
Objective: The student will be able to find items in the room that match the sounds on their list.
Resources:
Teacher created worksheets that have ten different phonics sounds listed
Several items in the room that match those sounds
Activities:
Ahead of time place several items in the room that have the sounds listed on the worksheet. Pass the worksheets out to the students and review the sounds listed. Have students move around the room looking for items that have that sound. They can either write the name of an object or draw a picture of it. They should list as many objects for each sound as they can find. Review the sheets together and point out any objects that were missed.
Closure:
This activity could also be done outside as a form of "I Spy". For example, with the whole class sitting or standing in a circle, you could say "I spy, with my little eye, something that has the long 'a' sound in the word." As students guess, tell them whether they are hot or cold. The one who guesses gets to go next.
