Lesson Plan Title : First Letter Bingo

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : This is a nice, quiet game. That is, until someone yells "BINGO"! Students will have to pay close attention as they play this game. They will have to think about the first letter of the name of the picture being shown.

Objective: The student will be able to identify the first letter of the word that names a picture shown by the teacher.

Resources:

Set of alphabet cards with pictures on one side

Blank bingo worksheets with the alphabet written across the bottom

Bingo markers

Activities:

Have the students fill in the bingo worksheet with letters from the alphabet. Explain that each letter should only be used once and that there will be some that are left over. Have students cross the letter off the list on the bottom as they write it on the board so they do not use it again.

Hold up a picture. If they have the first letter of the name of the object on their card, they can cover it. The first student to fill a row calls out 'Bingo!' and reads his letters. If he has them correct, he is the winner.

Closure:

To make the game more interesting, you can continue playing Bingo, but change what needs to be covered up to win. Students have to make the one of the following: an (x), a plus Sign (+), a picture frame (the outer square), four corners, postage stamp (all the squares around the middle square), black-out (all squares covered), etc.
