Lesson Plan Title : Correct or Incorrect Flag
Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)
Overview and Purpose : Capitalization and punctuation are the subjects of the following lesson. Students will be asked to recall what they have learned when they are shown sentences that are written both correctly and incorrectly.
Objective: The student will be able to
*recognize if the beginning letter in each sentence is capitalized.
*recognize if there is punctuation at the end of each sentence.
Resources:
2 paper plates per student
1 popsicle stick per student
Crayons or markers
Glue or tape
Power Point slides with 1, 2, or 3 sentences written on them - some with correct capitalization and punctuation and some without
Activities:
Have the students create their own correct/incorrect flag. Encourage them to be creative, but tell them it must be obvious which side is correct and which one is incorrect. (To make the flag, have them place the plate on their desk like they are going to eat. Have them color the center part of the plate. When both centers are colored in, tape or glue the popsicle stick to the back of one of the plates to make a handle. Then tape or glue both plates together back to back.)
After the flags are made, explain that you are going to show them a sentence. They should hold up the flag and tell you if the first letter of each sentence is capitalized and if there is a punctuation mark at the end of every sentence. Show them each slide and talk about any that are incorrect.
Closure:
Here are some ideas for the flags: Green/Red, Bright colors/Dark colors, Smiling Face/Frowning Face, Angel/Devil, etc. For homework, prepare a worksheet ahead of time with the incorrect sentences. Have students correct them at home.
