Lesson Plan Title : Lie or Lay and Sit or Set

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : Help your students understand when to use lie, lay, sit, and set with this mnemonic technique.

Objective: The student will be able to use the words lie, lay, sit, set correctly.

Activities:

Explain to the students that an easy way to remember whether to use sit or set and lie or lay is to focus on the 'I' in the words sit and lie.

Sit or Lie - Use sit when an object or person can do the action without help. 'I' can do it alone.

Examples:

The cups will sit here until someone picks them up.

Lie here on the rug until you feel better.

Set or Lay - Use set or lay when someone has to touch the object or person to make the action happen.

There is no 'I' to do it alone.

Examples:

Set the plates here and pick up the ball.

Lay the blanket on the bed.

Have students practice which word to use by labeling one side of the room as the "lie and sit" side, and the other side as the "lay and sat" side. Read a sentence and have them move to the side of the room that has the correct word. Ask them to explain why they chose the side they did.

Closure:

For homework, have students write a story that uses all four verbs correctly. Have them share their stories with the class.
