Lesson Plan Title : Winter Memory Quilt
Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Lower Elementary)
Overview and Purpose: In this art activity, each student makes one square for a patchwork quilt. They are encouraged to use various materials to show one of their favorite winter memories. The squares are then put together and displayed as a class quilt.
Objective: The student will be able to create a 6x6 or 8x8 inch square that shows a favorite memory about wintertime.
Resources:
6x6 or 8x8 pieces of heavy paper - assorted colors
Markers/crayons/colored pencils
Glitter
Glue
Pieces of ribbon or yarn
Various colors of construction paper
Packing tape
Activities:
Talk with your students about their favorite winter memories. Have them draw their memory on a square. Encourage them to use various materials to decorate it. When all the squares are completed, ask each student to describe their square to the class. Lay all the squares face down and tape them together. You can then display the quilt in the classroom or in the hallway.
Wrap Up:
This activity can also be done at home as a family project. You can send home paper or fabric squares and ask families to work together to create a square for the quilt.
