Lesson Plan Title : Energy Efficient Homes
Age Range: Grade 9 through Grade 12 (High School)
Overview and Purpose: Heating costs are rising every year, so in this activity students evaluate how energy-efficient their parents' homes are.
Objective: The student will be able to evaluate their parents' home to see how energy-efficient it is.
Resources:
Internet access for all students
Teacher created worksheet
Activities:
Have students use the worksheet as a guide while they search the Internet for ways to make a home more energy-efficient. When they have completed their list, have them evaluate their home and list the areas they think could be improved and ones that are already energy-efficient. Ask them to share this list with their parents.
Sample worksheet:
Area of the home | What should you look for in this area? | Is this area energy-efficient in your home? If yes, in what way? | What improvements could be to make it more energy-efficient? |
Front Door | |||
Pipes entering the house | |||
Hot water heater (if accessible) |
Wrap Up:
Remind students to be tactful when discussing the list with their parents. More advanced students could be challenged to evaluate and track how much heat is being lost each month in their home.
