Lesson Plan Title : Life in the Arctic
Age Range: Grade 6 through Grade 8 (Middle School)
Overview and Purpose: In this research project, students are challenged to explain the physical characteristics animals in the arctic need to survive that climate. They incorporate art into the project by creating a 3-D model of their animal.
Objective: The student will be able to research and report on an animal that lives in the arctic.
Resources:
Internet access for each student
Various materials needed for students to make a 3-D model of their animal
Activities:
This is a multi-day project. Each student should choose an animal that lives in the arctic. Have them research the physical characteristics that help their animal survive in that climate and write a short paragraph about each characteristic. When they are finished researching, they can use the materials provided (or bring in their own) to create a 3-D model that shows the physical attributes their animal needs to survive in the arctic. Have each student give a short presentation on their animal.
Wrap Up:
This activity can also be done in groups. More advanced students can be challenged to explain what special accommodations are needed for their animal to survive in a more moderate climate.
