Lesson Plan Title : Heart Healthy Food Musical Chairs
Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)
Overview and Purpose: This twist on the game of musical chairs helps reinforce which foods are healthy for your heart and which foods are not.
Objective: The student will be able to identify whether a food is healthy for your heart or not.
Resources:
Pictures of healthy and non healthy foods taped to index cards
CD player with lively music
Chairs
Activities:
Set the chairs up in a circle. Place an index card face down on two or three of the chairs. Have each student stand by a chair. Have them walk around the circle while you are playing the music. When the music stops, they should each sit in a chair. The students who sit in the chairs that have index cards should look at them and tell whether the food shown is healthy for their heart or not. If the food is healthy, then the student can stay in the game. If the food is not healthy, then the student is out. Continue the game until only one student is left.
Wrap Up:
Students could help you prepare for this game by cutting out pictures of food that is healthy for their heart. The cards can be used in a center if there is two of each type of healthy food. The students could choose one card that has unhealthy food on it and play the game like Old Maid.
