Lesson Plan Title : Graphing Conversation Hearts

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Students use conversation hearts to practice their graphing skills. They graph how many of each color heart they have on their desks. After they are finished, they get to eat a yummy treat.

Objective: The student will be able to create a graph showing how many of each color conversation hearts they have on their desk.

Resources:

Candy conversation hearts-enough for each student to have 10-12 hearts

Drawing paper

Overhead projector

Transparency with a graph written on it

Various colors of construction paper conversation hearts

Activities:

Place the paper conversation hearts on the board. Have students come up and separate the hearts by color. Using the overhead projector, have the students help you create a graph showing how many hearts of each color you have. Then pass out the candy hearts and the paper to the students. Have them separate the candy hearts by colors and create their own graph showing how many hearts of each color they have.

Wrap Up:

This activity can be used as a math center. The students can match the correct number of paper hearts with each graph. Older students could estimate how many of each color they have before they separate the hearts.
