Lesson Plan Title : Thankful Quilt
Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)
Overview and Purpose: Students work together on this assignment to create a quilt of thankfulness.
Objective: The student will be able to create a quilt square that shows what he is thankful for.
Resources:
8 by 8 inch squares of material
Fabric markers or crayons
Glitter glue
Non-sew tape
Dowel rod
Long piece of yarn or string
Activities:
Have students use the fabric squares to create a picture of something or someone they are thankful for. Lay the fabric squares face down in a square or rectangle shape and use the no-sew tape to hold them together. Attach a piece of fabric to the top of the quilt. Bend it in half and secure it again. This will make a sleeve that you can put a dowel rod through. Tie a piece of yarn or string to both ends of the dowel rod and hang the quilt on the wall or from the ceiling.
Wrap Up:
Students can extend this lesson by writing a few sentences about their picture. The descriptions can be mounted on construction paper and placed around the quilt. At the end of the year, the quilt can be passed to the student's next teacher or raffled off to the students.
