Lesson Plan Title : "I Have a Dream" Shown in Pictures

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, students demonstrate their understanding of Dr. King's dreams by drawing a picture representing one of them.

Objective: The student will be able to draw a picture representing one of Dr. King's dreams.

Resources:

A copy of the "I Have a Dream" speech for each student

Drawing paper

Crayons/markers/colored pencils

Activities:

Pass out a copy of Dr. King's speech to each student. Give the students time to read through the speech silently and then read through it together as a class. Discuss any unfamiliar words or ideas with the students. Have the students each choose or assigned to them one of the dream sentences. Have them write the dream sentence on the paper and then draw a picture representing that dream. Give the students an opportunity to share their pictures with the class and then display them.

Wrap Up:

For homework, students could create a picture representing one of their own dreams for America. They could share their pictures with the class the next day. These pictures could also be laminated and bound into a class book.
