Lesson Plan Title : A Story for Kwanzaa
Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)
Overview and Purpose: Sometimes understanding abstract ideas can be difficult for students. In this writing activity, students write a story demonstrating their understanding of one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
Objective: The student will be able to write a story about one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
Resources:
Information about the seven principles of Kwanzaa
Activities:
Discuss with your students the seven principles of Kwanzaa (unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith). Have the students work with a partner to come up with examples as you discuss each one. When you believe that they understand them, have each student choose one of the principles and write a story that demonstrates their understanding of it. When all the students are finished, allow them to share their stories with each other.
Wrap Up:
Students could also do this activity by finding newspaper articles that demonstrate each principle. Also, you can challenge the students to demonstrate all seven principles in the classroom.
