Lesson Plan Title : The Details of Kosher Foods
Age Range: Grade 9 through grade 12 (High School)
Overview and Purpose: "Kosher" is a term we hear often when we are talking about Jewish food, but how many of us really know what it means? In this lesson, students study the rules in depth and plan a meal that is entirely kosher.
Objective: The student will be able to plan a meal that is kosher.
Resources:
Internet access for all students
Activities:
Divide the class into small groups. Have each group use the internet to research what it means for foods to be kosher. Have them then plan a menu and style of cooking that ensures that all the food will be kosher. Encourage them to be creative in how they present their information, e.g., they could set a mock place setting and use index cards to explain various kosher elements.
Wrap Up:
You could have the students bring in various dishes that they have prepared by the kosher rules and have a feast. Also, consider inviting a local rabbi to visit your class and discuss the kosher laws.
