Lesson Plan Title : Pumpkin Seed Art

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: After you have estimated the seeds, cleaned out the inside of the pumpkin, and examined all the parts of the pumpkin, what is left? Seed art! Instead of throwing the seeds away, clean them off and let them air dry; then let the students use them to make pictures.

Objective: The student will be able to estimate how many pumpkin seeds they will need to complete a picture.

Resources:

Pumpkin seeds

Glue

Paper

Paint

Activities:

Explain to the students that they are going to create a Halloween picture from pumpkin seeds after they estimate how many seeds they will need to complete the picture. Have them draw the picture in pencil and then estimate how many seeds they need to complete it. Record their estimations on a piece of chart paper.

Let the students complete their picture by gluing the seeds on the paper and then painting them. After they have finished, have them count how many seeds they used. Record their answers next to their estimations. Talk about the results.

Wrap Up:

You can extend this activity by having your students write a short story about their picture. Display the pictures and the stories around the room until after Halloween.
