Lesson Plan Title : Neighborhood Map
Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)
Overview and Purpose: This is a fun activity that allows students to use their imaginations while practicing their map drawing skills.
Objective: The student will be able to draw a make believe map of a neighborhood.
Resources:
Chart or butcher paper
Crayons/markers
Activities:
Talk with your students about where they go trick or treating. Ask them what kind of experiences they have when they knock on the door. Are all the people home? Do they get all the same kind of treats? Do all the houses have the same decorations?
Explain to your students that they are going to create a map of all the best places in the neighborhood to go trick or treating (and those that they should stay away from.) This is a make-believe map so they can be as creative as they like. They should make a legend for the map (i.e. a candy corn means good candy, a red X means stay away, a ghost means great decorations.)
Divide the class into small groups and have them sketch out their map. They can then fill in the details with markers or crayons. Have them use arrows to show the route they would take to go trick or treating. When everyone is done, have each group share their map with the class.
Wrap Up:
You could lead this lesson into a discussion about Halloween safety. You could talk about traffic rules, strangers, and asking permission before digging into the candy.
