Lesson Plan Title : Candy Graphs

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Almost everyone loves Halloween candy. In this lesson, students create a graph showing their friends' and families' favorite kinds of Halloween candy.

Objective: The student will be able to make a bar graph showing how many people like four different types of Halloween candy.

Resources:

Teacher created worksheet

Activities:

Brainstorm different types of Halloween candy with your students. Write the list down on chart paper or the white board. Pass out the worksheet. Have the students choose four of the candies listed on the board and write one in each of the four squares on the worksheet. Then have them move around the room and ask their classmates to choose their favorite candy from the four listed. The student should write the child's name under the candy they choose. (Explain that a student might choose different things on each paper, based on the choices given.)

After all the students are finished, have them each create a bar graph. The graph should compare the four candies and show how many children like each one.

Sample worksheet:

Candy Corn

Marshmallow Pumpkins

Gummy Monsters

Caramel Apples

Wrap Up:

The students can extend this activity by taking the paper home and asking family members what candy they like. Students can, also, look at all the graphs and determine if there is an overall favorite candy.
