Lesson Plan Title : A Broom's Story

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary School)

Overview and Purpose: Students learn about point of view in this lesson. They write a story about a witch's adventures from the point of view of the witch's broom.

Objective: The student will be able to explain point of view and write a story from a witch's broom's point of view.

Activities:

Discuss point of view with your students. Talk about how events can appear differently to people. Ask the students to name some characters who have had stories told from their point of view. Explain that today they are going to write a story about a witch. They are going to tell the story from a broom's point of view.

When all the students have completed their stories, have them share them with the class.

Wrap Up:

Some students might need help understanding how point of view would affect the telling of the story. Brainstorm ways that events might look different to a broom than they would if the witch was telling the story. Suggestions might include the broom being left outside while the witch was inside by the fire, the broom having to take the witch places it does not want to go, or the broom thinking the potions and brews the witch makes are disgusting.
