Lesson Plan Title : Indian Corn Pictures

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Students use Indian corn to create a fall picture. They are able to use the kernels to explore different types of shading and color.

Objective: The student will be able to create a picture using kernels of Indian corn.

Resources:

Several cobs of Indian corn

Heavy Paper

Pencils/Markers

Glue

Activities:

Talk with the students about Indian corn and have them look closely at the different colors of kernels. Let them pop the kernels off the cobs. Have them sketch a picture and use the kernels to outline it. They can use markers or additional kernels to fill it in. Walk around as they are working and encourage them to explain how they are taking advantage of the different colors of the kernels to create their picture.

Wrap Up:

Consider having younger students start with a simpler picture, since it will take time to outline the picture with the kernels. They can always add more detail later if they want. You can extend the activity into writing by having the students choose one of the pictures and writing a description of what they see.
