Lesson Plan Title : Which Present is Bigger?

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Students will use estimation and rulers to figure out which present is bigger.

Objective: The student will be able to

*estimate which present is bigger.

*measure the presents to find out if their estimation is correct.

Resources:

Several presents which are similar in size and wrapped in a variety of ways.

Rulers

Teacher created worksheets

Activities:

This activity can be done in stations. Set the packages out in pairs. Have students estimate which of the two packages is bigger. Then have them measure the width, height, and length of the boxes to see if they are right.

Sample worksheet:

Station number
Estimation of which box is bigger
Total of the height + width + length for the first box
Total of the height + width + length for the second box
Which box is bigger?

Wrap Up:

This concept can be difficult for some students to understand. If students are struggling, provide duplicate boxes that have been opened up. Have students lay the boxes on top of each other to see which one is bigger. If the boxes are different shapes, you can cut up the bigger box so the students can manipulate it and try to fit it all on the smaller box.
