Lesson Plan Title : The Grinch - The Prequel
Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)
Overview and Purpose: The students will practice writing a narrative work as they explain how the Grinch became the way that he did. They will explain how his heart became two sizes too small and why he hated Christmas so much.
Objective: The student will be able to write a narrative piece telling the story of the Grinch's early years.
Resources:
The Grinch by Dr. Seuss
Activities:
Explain to the students that they are going to write the story of why the Grinch was the way he was. They are going to explain the events in his life that caused his heart to be two sizes to small and that made him hate Christmas. Encourage the students to be creative in their stories and to go beyond just saying he was a mean young Grinch.
Read The Grinch to your students and tell them to listen for clues to ideas that they can include in their story. Then have them work on their stories. When everyone has completed the writing process, share the stories with the class.
Wrap Up:
The writing process may take several days to complete. Encourage students who are finished with their pieces to help others proofread or re-work their stories.
