April Teaching Ideas for Your Classroom
April is right around the corner, and the smell of fresh spring flowers is everywhere. We are sure you have your plate full with test preparation and activities to wrap up the school year. Many schools go on spring break during April, which gives you the perfect opportunity to plan all your April activities around these holidays.
If you are looking for some fun and engaging teaching ideas for April, we have you covered with some great teaching ideas. Read on to find out!
Here are some of the best activities, holidays, and special events to incorporate into your April lesson plan!
1. Celebrate Earth Day
Earth day falls on the 22nd of April, and it is the perfect opportunity for you to teach students the significance of the natural resources on our planet and how we can conserve them. You can also teach your students ways to protect the plant and focus on green living. Here is a list of simple choices that can lead to a healthier planet:
- Reuse and recycle.
- Volunteer to clean your community or neighborhood.
- Conserve electricity, gas, and water
- Replace regular bulbs with energy-efficient ones.
- Plant trees
- Shop wisely and purchase from brands that use sustainable and environmentally-friendly means of production and packaging.
Earth day is also a great time to incorporate some reading into your lesson plans. Here are some of our top picks:
- Thank You, Earth by April Pulley Sayre
- Trees Maker Perfect Pets by Paul Czapak
- The Watcher: Jane Goodall’s Life with the Chimps
- 10 Things I Can Do to Help My World by Melanie Walsh
- No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference by Greta Thunberg
- The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth by Rachel Ignotofsky
You can also work on some Earth Day posters with your class to hang around the school or in the community to spread awareness regarding ways to protect the planet. Each poster can highlight one specific message, for example, "CONSERVE WATER ." Hang some chart papers and colors and allow your students to play their part in saving the planet. Another excellent idea for posters is making a step-by-step guide on "How to plant a tree."
2. Invite Community Helpers to Address Your Class
April is usually busy with tests, so if managing a class field trip is difficult, you can always find ways to bring the fun to your class. What better way to educate your class than to invite community helpers to come and share some insights on various professions and their importance?
Community helpers include veterans, doctors, nurses, farmers, chefs, police officers, firefighters, etc. Make the discussion an interactive one so that your students get a chance to interact with and learn from the guest speaker.
At the end of this activity, you can assign students a writing task on what they would like to be when they grow up or what inspires them about the professional they would like to choose.
3. Teach Major Landforms
April is a great time to incorporate teaching the major landforms of the earth into your lesson plans. You can use posters, picture books, slideshows, flashcards, etc. to teach your class about the following landforms:
- Four oceans of the world: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans.
- Mountains
- Hills
- Plateaus
- Plains
- Canyons
- Desserts
- Rivers
- Dunes
- Islands
- Coasts
4. Teach Habitats and Adaptations
Spring is the perfect time to teach your students about the different animal habitats and adaptations. Incorporating rainforests in your lesson plans is a great place to start as they offer a wide variety of animal habits and plants you can teach.
To build some basic knowledge about rainforests, we recommend reading books such as Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest to help your students understand various animals and plants and their role in our lives and the planet. You can also work on creating a picture book with your students about the various types of animal adaptations.
5. Celebrate National Library Week
Natural library week starts on the 3rd of April, and you don’t want to miss out on this excellent teaching opportunity. Use this time to teach your students how to navigate the library. This skill will help them in their academic and professional lives. It would help to coordinate with the school librarian to schedule the library.
To celebrate library week, can also plan a visit to a local library in your community. Many libraries would be happy to accommodate school students. It would be a great idea to register your class for their personal library cards (with parental permission, of course!)
6. International Children’s Book Day
International children’s book day is celebrated on the 2nd of April. It is a day dedicated to inspiring love for reading among your students.
Use this opportunity to promote literacy and teach your students the importance of reading books. We have put together a list of books to explore with your class to improve reading and comprehension skills. At the end of the reading activity, discuss critical takeaways with your student. Here are some of our favorites:
- Mrs. Pepperpot Stories by Alf Proysen
- Winnie-The-Pooh by A. A. Milne
- Five Children and It by E. Nesbit
- Many Moons by James Thurber
- The Goodnight Train by June Sobel
7. National Park Week Activates
National park week starts on the 16th of April, and this is the perfect chance to go outdoors and experience nature with your class. You can plan visits to local parts, national parks, or zoos.
Another way to celebrate National park week is by making nature journals. Plan a visit to a nearby park or even the school playground and have your students collect different types of leaves and write about them in their nature journals. You can also design a mini-park with your students using recycled materials.
Wrapping Up
We hope these April teaching ideas for your classroom will help give you some inspiration on how to wrap up the school year with fun and educational activities. Ending the school year doesn’t have to be all about exams and assignments. While this time of the school year can be stressful for both students and teachers, it is also full of fun-filled learning opportunities.
